On the ninth day of Christmas…

…my true love sent to me: nine Whitley Crescent, eight Russell Terrace, Seven Bridges House, six hexagons, five Abbey gates, four time pieces, three Thames bridges, two ancient monuments and an Inner Distribution Road.

Whitley Crescent in 2016

Whitley Crescent ran from Highgrove Street to Kendrick Road on the north side of Christchurch Road. All these properties now have Christchurch Road numbers but in the late 1830s and 1840s Joseph Huntley (1775-1849), who opened his biscuit shop on London Street in 1822, lived in retirement at No 9 with his daughter Hannah.

All the properties are Grade II listed and within the Christchurch Conservation Area.

When they were built, these houses were away from the noise and pollution of the town up on a hill and importantly as they were at that time outside the Reading Borough boundary, rates were not payable to Reading corporation.

In 2022 Reading will be commemorating 200 years since the founding of Huntley & Palmers.
