…my true love sent to me: five Abbey gates, four time pieces, three Thames bridges, two ancient monuments and an Inner Distribution Road.

Reading Abbey originally had five gates of which the only one that remains is the Inner Gateway that separated the public and private areas of the Abbey. This gateway was last restored in 2018 as part of the Reading Abbey conservation project.

The other four gates were: the north gate, near the north-west corner of the Forbury Gardens; the compter gate, to the south of St Laurence’s church; the east gate, near the Kennet at the south-east corner of Reading Gaol and the south gate near Reading Central Library.

p.s. High up on the wall of the south side of St Laurence’s church is an old cast iron sign that says ‘Outer Gate of Reading Abbey’.
